Consideration will be given to drug/substance abuse, child abuse and AIDS awareness.


CE 304 Educational Psychology (2)

Psychology as related to the learning process. Test and measurements and classroom management will be explored.


CE 305 Methods in Teaching Reading in the Elementary Schools (2)

Methods, materials, and theories in the teaching of reading. Investigation of reading problems and remediation techniques on levels PreK-3 and 4-6.


CE 306 Computer Applications for the Classroom Teacher (2)

Introduction to computers and computer programming in the languages BASIC and LOGO, with emphasis on applications in education and educational institutions. Examinations of current software to include programs of classroom management, programmed learing, tutorial aids, and computer assisted instruction.

Introduction to the distinctive objectives, teaching practices and educational problems of private Christian elementary schools. Recent history and current trends will be illustrated by visits to representative schools.

Study of the changes in human behavior by which skills, knowledge, and attitudes are learned and a survey of learning theory; contemporary sociological problems in church developmental processes in the light of the development of individuals in relation to their socio-economic background.

An introductory course in developing a basic philosophy of Christian education in regard to forming Christian character through education. Goals in Christian Education are stressed.

An examination of the biblical base and theological implications for developing a mature Christian education ministry.

Study of marriage, the family, and the biblical role of family in the realm of education with emphasis on contemporary family life problems within the educational program of the church.

A survey of the teaching ministry of the church, including biblical and theological foundations, the role of the pastor, the ministry of the Christian education specialist, the organization, administration and evaluation of educational ministries, and a study of the various curricula and programs.

Designed to equip the student with tools for studying, applying and teaching the Word of God. Actual inductive study in a specific biblical book is provided.

A nuts and bolts course the Christian education major. Lessons for different ages will be designed and taught both before the class and in actual field situations.

A study of learning theories and curriculum development theory, principles of curriculum development and practice in specific situations.

An introduction to ministering to adults, with a survey of adult psychological and development theories, goals in adults education, and development of courses and curricula.

The biblical philosophy of a discipleship lifestyle that would exhibit evangelism, encouragement, and edification to the one being discipled as the focus of this course.

An exploration of the developmental stages of moral reasoning and formation of faith, especially in adolescents. Examination of the formative work of Piaget, as well as studies of Kohlberg, Powers, Fowler, Marshall and others to understand the research base of adolescent development.

Research seminar on new areas of Christian education concern, especially examining community resources, community problems, public school trends, and the latest research in Christian education. Should be taken in the student’s final year of study.


CE 513 Integration of Youth Ministry (3)

Employment of management principles to develop skills in designing and implementing a balanced youth ministry in a local church or parachurch agency. Emphasis given to staff relationships, goal setting, and preparation of action plans for ministry


CE 514 Evangelistic Communication to Youth (2)

Examination of the principles and skills necessary to communicate the gospel to non-Christian high school students group settings. Opportunities provided to improve skills in laboratory contexts.


CE 601 Ministry to Single Adults (2) 

A presentation of both proven and experimental methods of developing an effective ministry to single adults through the church. Theory regarding the state of singleness will be highlighted.


CE 602 Ministry to the Disabled (2) 

An overview of the different area of ministry to the handicapped, including the physically disabled, mentally retarded, learning disabled, and visually or hearing impaired. Observations and other field experience are required.


CE 603 Camping Ministry(3) 

Philosophy, planning, staffing, and methodologies for effective day camp and week camps are surveyed.


CE 604 Vacation Bible School(3) 

Changing attitudes regarding the purpose of the Vacation Bible School are addressed, as well as the planning, staffing, various curricula, and scheduling of the school.


CE 605 Seminar in Christian Education (3) 

An expert in the field of Christian Education presents his findings regarding specific applications of the theory of Christian Education.


CE 606 Current Studies in Christian Education (3)

Topics selected which deal with significant issues related to Christian education. Recent titles include: Alcoholism and the Family; Counseling Youth; Creative Overhead Transparencies; Inter-generational Learning; Proverbs and Family Life; and Youth and Media.


CE 607 Seminar on Youth Problems (3)

Individual needs and problems in the adolescent subculture with attention given to developing a ministry to the individual youth in the Christian environment.


CE 608 Christian Journalism (3)

A practical course for developing articles for Christian publications including discussion of principles of clear writing. Articles written by students are edited by instructor and returned for further review and editing.


CE 609 Religious Drama (3)

Theory, history, and use of drama as a means of enriching the local church program of worship, education, and evangelism. Selected relious dramas are read in a “readers theater” style. The techniques of preparation and presentation are applied in actual dramatic performance.


CE 610 Practicum: Teaching (3)

Student and teacher are engaged in the preparation, use, and evaluation of educational materials and experiences in a teaching-learning situation. This non-repeatable practicum can be combined with other internship programs to earn the total number of internship hours required in a student’s particular degree program.

Individual research on an approved topic under the supervision of a faculty member in the department. Offered with option of letter grade or credit/ no credit.

Overview of the basic parts of higher education and their distinctive roles in Bible colleges and institutes, Christian liberal arts colleges, and seminaries: academic administration, faculty resourses, student personnel, services, finance and budget, board and presidential roles, development and public relations.


CE 613 Seminar: Contemporary Issues in Education (3)

Topics chosen which reflect research interests of faculty or visiting faculty; or suggested interests of program participants. Frequently repeated seminars include: Intercultureal Competencies for Missionaries; and Modes of Theological Education.


CE 614 Methods of Statistical Analysis (3)

A study of basic statistics as it relates to educational research, the collection and tabulation of data, the properties of frequency and distributions, histograms and frequency polygons, measures of central tendency and correlation. A review of the essentials of mathematics necessary for statistical studies will be included.

An integration of principles from educational theory and perspectives from systematic and historical theology.

A consideration of a significant personalities and issues in the development of Western education to the end of the eighteenth century. Prerequisite: completion of selected readings.

Participants will examine for research tradition which inform intercultural education: cognitive styles, cognitive development, praxis and pedagogy, and educational anthropology. Issues-oriented research projects will encourage the integration of theological concerns with field ministry.

An examination of developmental problems and educational tasks relating to distinct stages of life: a)childhood, b)adolescence, c)adulthood, d)aging, e)human sexuality. This seminar is offered in response to requests for any one of the specific areas of emphasis.
